Like previous Fritz Lang, David Fincher, or Bong Joon Ho, talented debut filmmaker Lado Kvataniya used the concepts of detectives and serial killers to create an exciting, terrifying, and unforgettable narrative that ultimately revolves around an era: in this case, the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. With the end of Glasno and communist rule, the West also became aware (not surprisingly) of the fact that Russia also had serial killers - the most notorious case may be Andrei Chikatilo, nicknamed Rostov Ripper, or Russian Hannibal. Based on these and many other sources, Kwatanya and screenwriter Olga Gorodtskaya constructed an immersive psychological puzzle that jumps back and forth in time to reveal new possible motivations for all the protagonist's actions. It all started in 1990, when the detective Isa Davidoff was celebrating his promotion and received a phone call reporting a crime identical to the serial killer he had captured several years ago...
