According to legend, if three strangers gather in front of the idol of Guanyin (the Chinese goddess of destiny) on Chinese New Year's Eve and make a wish together, Guanyin will open her eyes and heart to fulfill this wish. In 1938, during the Chinese New Year in London, Crystal Shackleford had an idol and decided to test this legend. She randomly selected two strangers from the street and made this suggestion to them.
